anotace REGENERATION OF INDUSTRIAL AREAS AND ADAPTIVE REUSE OF SPECIAL INDUSTRIAL BUILDINGS Regeneration of areas, previously used by industry, is a social and spatial necessity in our country, wealthy in number of existing redundant industrial buildings, for their important role in the landscape and urban structures. A significant part of the Czech Republic was traditionally used by industrial production and mining - and so the country dispose the remains of these activities in large numbers. Not all of them are exclusive architecture, worthy of the heritage protection - but all of them are holders of stored energy and therefore potential. Recycling of materials and constructions is a logic and traditional way, how to act sustainably, while building. An important part of the sustainabile attitude to human life on Earth is regarded as the quality of our environment. Industrial building was in this term a specific part of the man-made system - its role in wider context is changing after the loss of original purpose, but the meaning should remain - it is important to appreciate the positive role of "fault" in an otherwise uniform and thus confusing the population structure by such construction can play. This message is more intense, the unusuality of the building is greater. With special character of industrial buildings, which often represent the dehumanizing machine, or a kind of huge statues of unusual scales, the power of the symbolism of the new use of industrial buildings is enhanced. However, concerning objects, whose conversion and regeneration is extremely difficult, the question arises whether it is possible, wise and sustainable to return all of them in life? Response on this question requires a lot of sensitive research. Existing conversion yet proven that these elusive objects awakens creativity of all who are in the process of regeneration. Also they are often important elements or even landmarks in the urban structure and landscape and therefore often bearers of the genius loci. This quality can be appreciated while adapting for new use. A successful conversion of special constructions, which we know mainly from abroad, but whose examples exist in our country as well, recall of alchemical transmutation of common metals into gold, thanks to their initial improbability. The strength of their testimony could help to understand the importance of preserving not only the other remains of human industrial activity, but also it can enlight with a positive light the regeneration of industrial areas in general. This is very important especially in our region, where the large number of unique objects remains - sometimes in vain - unused.
