anotace Architectural concrete is appearing increasingly on the pages of prestigious architectural magazines. The reason for this is its aesthetic quality and monolithic expression of the structures that are built from it. It is obvious why it is also called artificial stone. But is the architectural concrete a sustainable material ? There is no exact definition of the term sustainable material. Therefore, for the assessment of individual materials in terms of sustainability it si necessary to establish a set of characteristics which should be satisfied by such materials. This can be done only in the response to their so-called life cycle, which includes everything from extraction of raw materials, material manufacture, its incorporation in the building to final disposal. In practice it is however often more effective to sum long list of sustainability criteria of the material to the selected numeric variables such as carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions or the embodied energy especially in the first part of life cycle of material. The main considerations in terms of sustainability in the first part of life cycle of material of architectural concrete are the emissions of CO2 caused by the manufacture of portland cement and steel for the reinforcement. Constructional solution and thermal inertia of concrete are crucial for the second part of life cycle of material of architectural concrete. For the third part of life cycle of material the main issue is the recyclability of concrete. Although most of these considerations seem to imply that architectural concrete is not suitable material for the sustainable construction, the right design solutions such as the choice of effective constructional system or cement with recycled component can make a huge difference in the final outcome.
